Auschwitz III-monowitz
Auschwitz III-Monowitz also known as Monowitz-Buna it was initially designed to become a sub-camp of the Auschwitz complex but was converted into a slave labor camp. The camp held approximately 12,000 prisoners the majority being Jewish but also held political prisoners and non-Jewish criminals. The Monowitz prisoners were set to work at various factories that made rubber and synthetic oil. Being sent was a better for the prisoners of Auschwitz but wasn't considerably better as the average life span for a Monowitz prisoners 1-4 months. Those deemed not suitable for work were gassed at Birkenau. Monowitz was bombed and raided three times during the war. The first raid was conducted August 20, 1944 by the US Air Army. The bombardment lasted for 28 minutes and 606,226 kilograms of high explosive bombs were dropped from an altitude of 26,000 feet. The second raid occurred September 13, 1944 by 96 heavy air bombers which lasted for 13 minutes. The third and last attack was on December 26, 1944 and a total of 308,216 kilograms of bombs were dropped. The camp was finally liberated January 27 1945.
